Fairview Elementary Students Discuss Caring
Published December 2, 2010
In conjunction with Character Under Construction, a group of Fairview Elementary fifth grade students were asked to write what "caring" means to them. Below are a few of the articles that were submitted.
CARING ABOUT OTHERS Caring about others is very important. To me it means to help other people. It can also mean to be nice, make them happy, include them, stick up for them, or cheer someone up. Many people have cared for others. Martin Luther King, Jr. cared about a lot of people. He stuck up for African Americans when they needed to be cared for. I don’t know much about him, but Samuel Johnson says, and I quote, "Kindness is in our power, even when fondness is not." The Roman philosopher Seneca said, "Wherever there is a being, there is an opportunity for kindness." Caring is one of the traits that helps us live our lives the way we want to live them. |
CARING Caring is when you do something nice for others like helping with homework or helping someone clean their room. When you care for others you get this warm feeling inside your body and that warm feeling is telling you that you did the right thing. Caring is one of the most important things in life. If you are not nice to others, then no one will ever be nice to you. |
CARING DEFINITION: To show concern for someone or something Many students at Fairview Elementary School care for one another. Here are some examples: Playground: Someone falls down and we all help. Classroom: Someone’s having trouble with work, then we all give them a hand. Lunchroom: Need Silverware? I’ll be there to help. We help each other in many different ways. And, if we keep it up, we might all be rewarded one day. |
AFTERWORD These three articles are just a sample of many wonderful essays that were written by Fairview Elementary students. As a school counselor, I was very encouraged by the expressions of kindness, compassion, caring, and helping others that I read throughout all the articles. More importantly, we at school can observe the "caring in action." The kind and caring actions of teachers, staff, parents and students are everywhere at FES. How can we make our world a more caring place? Be kind and caring. Model your kindness to others. Teach by example. Show gratitude for even small things. Everyone appreciates a "thank you" and a "please." Some can give great gifts to others to show their care. Let’s remember that even a small deed of caring makes a difference. |
