Facilitated IEP Training

Published October 14, 2010

Parents of special education students now have an opportunity to participate in some specialized training.  In the coming weeks, the Williamson County Schools' Student Support Services Department will provide training for parents and general education teachers.  The training is similar to what school administrators and special education staff members have experienced this semester and involves facilitated Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.

A facilitated IEP meeting is one in which:

·    An IEP is developed by a collaborative team whose members share responsibility for the meeting process and results.

·    Decision-making is managed through the use of facilitation skills.

The process of using and participating in a facilitated IEP team process will likely enhance building relationships between home and school members and focus the IEP meeting content and process on the needs of the student.  It will allow meetings to become more efficient and effective for all members of the IEP team.

Special educator training sessions included three-day intense training with a follow-up session later.  School administrators have had a half day overview of the trainings.  Parents and general educators are being invited now into an overview session of the process.

Many parents who have attended IEP meetings this fall may have been able to participate in a meeting where many of the strategies are being used.  Now is the opportunity to attend a session designed for you.  Trainers Doug and Joyce Little will lead these sessions.  Four parent sessions are being offered:  October 25 or October 29 at either 2–4 p.m. or 6–8 p.m. at the WCS School Board offices at 1320 West Main Street.  They are being held in the Carolyn Campbell Room located on the second floor of the board offices.
