Battle of Books Champ Crowned

Published May 26, 2011

Grassland Middle School claimed the 2011 WCS Middle School Battle of the Books championship. The annual competition is sponsored by the WCS Curriculum Department and was held May 10 at Franklin High School.

All WCS middle schools participate in the battle, with each team playing three qualifying rounds to determine who advances to the championship round. The battles were extremely close, with only eight points separating the teams following the qualifying rounds. Brentwood Middle and Grassland Middle tied for second, with Grassland winning the tiebreaker and going on to defeat Heritage Middle in the championship.

The Battle of the Books is an academic competition based on questions from titles chosen by coaches and/or librarians from the Volunteer State Book Award nominations. All middle school students are encouraged to read as many of the books as possible and participate in the qualifying exam, which takes place in February at each middle school.

Coaches and librarians will meet in June to choose titles for the 2012 Battle of the Books and begin planning for another great competition among WCS middle schools.
