Adult Education

Published August 4, 2010

The mission of the Williamson County Adult Education program is to provide educational opportunities to adult learners, ages 18 and older who are not enrolled in school.

Last year, the Adult Basic Education portion of the program helped approximately 200 students earn their GED. It also introduces adult students to post secondary education and training through partnerships with WorkForce Essentials, Tennessee Technology Centers and the Tennessee Department of Labor.

In addition to helping adults earn their GED, the Williamson County Adult Education program offers English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, which served more than 300 students from 38 countries last year.

Additional courses introduce ESOL students to American culture and customs. The EL/Civics class teaches students how to become an American citizen and how to work with local government, school and community agencies.

Another class offered through Adult Education is COMPASS PREP. "This class was formed two years ago when a number of adults attempted to enter LPN programs, certified nursing assistant programs and Biomedical Tech programs and realized in order to pass admission tests they needed a remediation/refresher course in basic reading and math skills," said Adult Education Director Rhonda Booker Long. "Many of our COMPASS PREP students are now gainfully employed in the high demand field of health care."

All of the Williamson County Adult Education classes are free and available days and evenings. A brief orientation class is required. Classes are open to anyone 18 years or older who is not currently enrolled in school. To make an orientation appointment, call Jody Kammerud at 472-4075 or Dawn Kephart at 472-5007.
