Academic All-Stars-4768

Published April 14, 2011

Welcome to a new feature of IN FOCUS called Academic All-Stars.  The purpose of this section is to highlight students from each school for their academic achievements.  Each Academic All-Star will be chosen by his or her principal.  This week's Academic All-Stars come to us from Longview Elementary, Pearre Creek Elementary, Spring Station Middle and Sunset Middle schools.

LONGVIEW ELEMENTARY

Preston Sutliffe

Kind, responsible, dedicated.  That's how teachers at Longview Elementary School describe 11 year-old Preston Sutliffe. As a member of the Safety Patrol Team, Preston is a proven leader who is respectful to both teachers and students.

"Preston tracks every bus number, welcomes others with a smile, and helps walk younger students to class if they need assistance," said Principal Dr. Jonathan Ullrich.  "Preston truly exemplifies the leadership that Longview expects from our students in fifth grade."

Preston began attending Longview when the school opened in 2007.  He says his favorite subject is math because he enjoys multiplying, dividing and working with fractions.  When he's not in school, Preston likes to play with friends and spend time outdoors.

PEARRE CREEK ELEMENTARY

Paden Leigh

Paden Leigh is a fifth grader whose strong work ethic has helped her make great strides in the classroom.  That's why administrators at Pearre Creek Elementary chose her as this year's Academic All-Star.

"Paden has improved her studies because she took ownership of her learning and persisted in practice," said Pearre Creek Principal Beth Ferguson.  "She is also particularly kind, helpful in class and always prepared.  That's why we are excited to recognize her pursuit of excellence."

Paden says she enjoys going to school at Pearre Creek because of all the great teachers.  Her favorite subjects are math and social studies.  Outside of the classroom, Paden likes to draw and sing, and when she grows up, she says she might like to be an artist.

SPRING STATION MIDDLE

Hayley Rutchow

Hayley Rutchow is an eighth grader who stays focused academically despite a busy schedule.  Hayley recently scored a perfect 25 on the Explore test, which is given to eighth and ninth graders to help them prepare for the ACT.

When she's not studying, Hayley stays busy as a competitive ice skater.  "I fell in love with the sport as a child," said Hayley.  "It's a lot of fun to travel to different states and compete."

Off the ice, Hayley participates in the school's video announcements team and likes to cheer on the school's baseball squad.  And while she's excited about attending high school next year, Hayley says she'll always remember her time at Spring Station.

SUNSET MIDDLE

Justin Harrell

Eighth grader Justin Harrell is a model student both in and out of the classroom.  That's according to teachers at Sunset Middle School who say Justin is the perfect choice for this year's Academic All-Star award.

In addition to being a dedicated student, Justin is a talented musician who enjoys being part of the Sunset Middle School Band.

"I play percussion," said Justin.  "It's a lot of fun and we've got a good band program at Sunset Middle."

Justin's favorite subjects include math and science, which will serve him well considering he wants to be a civil engineer when he grows up.  When he's not studying, Justin enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.
