Published March 31, 2011
Welcome to a new feature of IN FOCUS called Academic All-Stars. The purpose of this section is to highlight students from each school for their academic achievements. Each Academic All-Star will be chosen by his or her principal. This week's Academic All-Stars come to us from Nolensville Elementary, Oak View Elementary, Ravenwood High and Scales Elementary.
NOLENSVILLE ELEMENTARY | |
Skylar Treece |
Skylar Treece is an active student whose hard work in the classroom inspires those around him. Teachers say his strong integrity and positive attitude have made him a favorite among his peers. "Skylar truly exemplifies Cardinal pride," said Nolensville Teacher Jessica Sullivan. "Not only has he made huge academic gains in all subject areas, but he comes to school every day with a smile on his face and ready to give 100 percent." |
Skylar's two favorite subjects are math and science, although he holds a passion for music, art and drama. "I'm mostly a creative person," said Skylar. "I love to act and draw which is why I think I might like to be an actor or an artist when I grow up." When he's not in school, Skylar enjoys participating in Boy Scouts. "I like being in Boy Scouts because I enjoy meeting new people and helping the Earth," said Skylar. "It just breaks my heart to see people tearing down trees to build a football field or something." |
OAK VIEW ELEMENTARY | |
Anthony Doyle |
Having moved to America from England as a young child, 10 year-old Anthony Doyle knows how to deal with change. Teachers say Anthony's ability to handle adversity and his dedication in the classroom has led him to improve his studies. "Anthony has made wonderful academic gains this school year," said Oak View Teacher Lynn Sawyer. "He has demonstrated great growth in his self direction and personal responsibility for his work. We are all so proud of him." |
Anthony says his favorite subject is science because he enjoys the experiments. Outside of school, Anthony stays busy with Boy Scouts, video games and basketball, which he began playing in kindergarten. Anthony says he's not entirely sure what he wants to be when he grows up, although he might like to do something associated with music. "I might want to be a drummer," said Anthony. "I think that would be fun." |
RAVENWOOD HIGH | |
Reid Creviston |
Tremendous work ethic, self-discipline and leadership - that's how administrators at Ravenwood High School describe junior Reid Creviston. "Reid's intelligence, honesty and kindness set him apart from other students at Ravenwood," said Assistant Principal Leigh Webb. "He has an elevated passion for learning and his determination for success ensures that he will never settle for anything less." |
Reid says he feels fortunate to attend Ravenwood because the teachers there have helped him prepare for life at the next level. "The thing I've enjoyed most about Ravenwood is the college prep," said Reid. "Being here has really helped me improve my studies and how hard I work." Fortunately, it's not all work and no play for Reid who says he enjoys staying active by snow skiing, wakeboarding, playing the guitar and hanging out with friends. |
SCALES ELEMENTARY | |
Annabella Shima |
Annabella Shima is a fifth grader who's always on the go. According to teachers at Scales Elementary School, Annabella's many interests keep her busy, but her schoolwork always comes first. "Annabella is very active in our school," said Principal Rick West. "She not only works hard to maintain good grades in her classes, but she was a finalist in our school’s Spelling Bee for the past two years. She also participates in our school play and our Student Leadership Team." |
Having attended Scales since kindergarten, Annabella says she loves everything about the school, especially the teachers. "The teachers here are amazing," said Annabella. "If you ever have trouble with anything, they're always willing to help you in their free time." Considering her active imagination and her love for reading, it's no surprise that Annabella hopes to one day write books for a living. "I want to be a creative author," said Annabella. "I just think it's fun to be creative and write about different things." |
