CROCKETT ELEMENTARY

Kate Barker

Crockett Elementary School fourth grader Kate Barker has been chosen as her school's Academic All-Star for the 2010-2011 school year.

Born in Ethiopia, Kate was adopted and brought to the United States a few years back.  She began school at Crockett as a kindergartener despite knowing very little English.  According to her teachers, Kate has made terrific strides and is one of the hardest working students in her class.

Kate says her favorite subject is science and she hopes to one day be an artist when she grows up.  As for life outside of school, Kate plays several sports but says her two favorite are soccer and basketball.

Although moving from Ethiopia to America has been quite a transition for her, Kate says she feels right at home at Crockett.  "I like Crockett because I have a lot of friends here," said Kate.  "I really love the teachers too.  They're really nice."

FRANKLIN HIGH

Cameron Duke

Junior Cameron Duke is Franklin High School's Academic All-Star for the 2010-2011 school year.  Duke was chosen for the honor because of the dramatic improvement he's made both in and out of the classroom.

"Cameron was struggling the first quarter," said FHS Assistant Principal Marlon Ruck.  "But he started working hard and really turned it around the second quarter."

While it hasn't been easy, Cameron credits those around him for his success.  "I really like it here at Franklin High School," said Cameron.  "The teachers are really helpful and Mr. Ruck has been a huge inspiration for me."

Outside of school, Cameron enjoys playing on the FHS Bowling Team, which finished a few pins shy of making the state tournament this year.  As for future plans, he says he'd like to one day have a career in law enforcement.

"I'm looking forward to taking the criminal justice class next year," said Cameron.  "My goal is to either be a detective or work for the FBI."

GRASSLAND MIDDLE

Shelby Loftis

Grassland Middle School's Academic All-Star for the 2010-2011 school year is eighth grader Shelby Loftis.  According to her principal, Shelby is a model student who works hard at her studies but still finds time for other activities.

"Shelby is a dedicated student, co-President of the GMS Student Council and an enthusiastic soccer player," said GMS Principal Dr. Susan Curtis.  "She represents every quality that the faculty and staff of GMS hold dear."

Shelby says she loves attending Grassland Middle School because of all the extra-curricular activities.  Her favorite subjects are math and science - and while it might be years away, Shelby says she already knows what she's like to do for a living.

"I would really like to be a teacher," said Shelby.  "I have had a bunch of really good teachers in the past and I know that the good ones make learning more enjoyable."
