Published November 11, 2010
Welcome to a brand new feature of IN FOCUS called Academic All-Stars. The purpose of this section is to highlight students from each school for their academic achievements. Each Academic All-Star will be chosen by his or her principal. This week's Academic All-Stars come to us from Brentwood Middle, College Grove Elementary and Edmondson Elementary schools.
BRENTWOOD MIDDLE | |
Paul Tharp |
Seventh grade student Paul Tharp is Brentwood Middle School's Academic All-Star for the 2010-11 school year. Principal Bill Harlin chose Tharp for the honor because of his determination to succeed in the classroom. |
Paul's favorite subject is math, which could come in handy considering his future goals. "When I grow older I would like to be either an engineer or an architect," said Paul. When he's not doing homework, Paul enjoys spending his free time learning about trains. "I've always been interested in trains and I read about them a lot, which has actually helped me improve my reading skills." |
COLLEGE GROVE ELEMENTARY | |
Anna Rakes |
Like a lot of students her age, College Grove fifth grader Anna Rakes likes to play sports and hang out with friends. But it's her hard work in the classroom that really sets Anna apart from her peers. College Grove Principal Kari Miller chose Anna to be the school's Academic All-Star for the 2010-2011 school year. Anna grew up in the College Grove area and says she loves the school because its small and everybody knows each other. |
When it comes to school, Anna's favorite subjects are social studies and reading. "I like social studies because we normally do a lot of projects," said Anna. "In reading, we have centers and sometimes we'll do games." Outside of the classroom, Anna likes to read, play softball and ride horses. In fact, Anna says it's her love for animals that could one day lead to a career. "I don't know exactly what I want to be when I grow up," said Anna, "but I really like working with animals so probably something like that." |
EDMONDSON ELEMENTARY | |
Brendan Petrovich |
Whether he's playing soccer or studying math, Edmondson Elementary School fifth grade student Brendan Petrovich always tries his best. It's a trait that has helped him become Edmondson's Academic All-Star for the 2010-2011 school year. "Brendan has risen to the demands of the fifth grade," said Edmonson Principal Julie Sparrow. "He always puts in the extra effort and he continues to impress us all every day." |
Brendan is known around the school for being someone who's quick to help those in need. During a recent literature circle, Brendan took the time to help his fellow classmates understand the book at a deeper level. "I really enjoy working in groups," said Brendan. "It's one of my favorite things about school and it makes me feel good when I'm able to help out my classmates." |
