CENTENNIAL HIGH

  Phillip Brasher

Parents:
Phil & Jamie Brasher

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
I have taken Tim Sawyer’s class for four years now and have loved every minute of it.  During my freshman and sophomore years, he would always give us great “life” speeches about being smart, safe, or just how to use our brains.  Whenever I needed help, he would right there to assist me in any way he could.  Through his class I learned a great deal about engineering, architecture and drafting; knowledge that is rarely offered in regular core classes.  In my junior and senior years, he began teaching us independence and how to think for ourselves.  Now, every day I enter class, he has a little saying written on his board and usually an anecdote to follow, whether it be “don’t be lazy” or “sprinkle junior mints on your popcorn at the movie theatre.”  This is always a great start to class.  I will always remember Mr. Sawyer and the things he taught me, which will be especially helpful as I continue my path towards being an engineer.

Byeong Kim & Jae Lee

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
As my gifted-counselor, Connie Watson always knows how to keep me grounded amidst my hectic high school days.  She approaches me not as a mere counselor, a teacher, or any other authority figure, but more as a friend.  During our brief sessions in her room, we would talk about anything and everything from my college choices to my supposed need for a prom date, and she would make me forget that I was still within school walls.  Because she has constantly stood behind my choices, I’ve learned from her to stand behind my own decisions as well, knowing that sometimes mistakes are meant to be and that everything ultimately lies on my reactions.  If I could, I would take Mrs. Watson with me to college as my own personal mentor and confidant, but I know that Williamson County needs her as much as I do.  Therefore, I thank Mrs. Watson with all my heart for the four years of her trust and camaraderie and wish for all students to have the opportunity to have such figure of comfort within their own schools.

FRANKLIN HIGH

  Colin Andrew

Parents:
Whitney & Kara Andrew

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
Kelly Calhoun, hands down, was the toughest teacher I had in high school.  Her course was more like boot camp than a high school AP English class.  I admit I became frustrated more than once by the amount of English homework I received.  However, at the end of the year, I realized that the AP English exam was the easiest one I had taken.  This was not due to the difficulty of the content but rather the preparation I received.  Like a drill instructor, Ms. Calhoun tested her students’ endurance, broke them down, and built them back up into annotating, analyzing, and criticizing machines.  The preparation she gave me has enabled me to succeed in English this year as well.  Not all the training we received was painful.  We still found time to watch movie versions of the books we read (i.e. The Great Gatsby), draw sketches of characters (such as those in Faust), write parodies of works we read (such as “Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God” and the works of Ernest Hemingway), create artistic representations of works we read, and read a few articles from the always-funny, never politically correct Onion newspaper.  In the end Ms. Calhoun was my favorite teacher because she performed her job to perfection while keeping her students entertained in the process.

Honors and Awards:
AP Scholar with Distinction, Accepted into Governor’s School of Emerging Technologies, Commended National Merit Student, Received 4-year Air Force ROTC scholarship, Received scholarship from Brigham Young University, Member of National Honors Society, Member of National Spanish Honors Society, Salutatorian.

  Ian Berger

Parents:
Brian & Sarah Berger

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
The AP U.S. History curriculum is one of the largest of any class. The amount of laws, elections and wars gives an empty feeling in preparation for the AP exam.  Combine that with the fact that the New Deal isn’t exactly the most exciting subject in the world, and you get a problematic situation. Nevertheless, Mitzi Terry made every day of that class enjoyable, and I’ve never felt more prepared for an exam in my life.  Apart from a course in U.S. History, Mrs. Terry taught me one very important skill.  To put it simply, I learned how to study.  Because of Mrs. Terry’s tests, I know how to weed out unimportant facts and predict questions that will be asked.  Without these skills, I don’t know what I would have done in my classes this year, like Biology, and in my future.

Honors and Awards:
Principal’s list, AP Scholar with Distinction, University of Tennessee Alumni Association Top Student, Player’s Player of the Year (soccer), Coach’s Player of the Year (soccer), Coach’s Award (soccer).

Post Graduation Plans:

  Alexandria David

A Williamson County teacher that has influenced you:
Karen Mauldin was my teacher for three years and helped me fall in love with chemistry.  She always made the class interesting and made it easy to learn because she is so familiar with the subject.  She wasn’t afraid to push me to do the best I could in her class.  Mrs. Mauldin, at the request of students, agreed to teach the first IB Chemistry class at Franklin High and spent the summer before the 2009-2010 school year learning the material and planning the class, not to mention countless hours during the year making the class more interesting.  Her dedication to the subject made me want to learn more about chemistry and as a result of this I changed my major to one that included chemistry.  Mrs. Mauldin is always willing to help her students whenever they need help and gives the individualized attention students need to have a deeper understanding of the subject.  Chemistry is not an easy subject but Mrs. Mauldin encourages her students from the second they walk through the door until the last day of school.  Her confidence in her students helps them perform to their fullest capabilities.

Karen Mauldin has been my Chemistry teacher for the past three years.  I had her for Chemistry Honors, Chemistry AP, and Chemistry IB.  I am not someone who loves science, but Mrs. Mauldin’s Chemistry class became my favorite class these past three years.  Mrs. Mauldin has been a constant source of encouragement, always pushing me to do better; not just in her class, but in life.  More than just a teacher, she is a mentor and friend.  She truly cares about her students and invests herself in them.  She has become an inspiration to me to never give up and to face challenges.  She reminded me constantly that I needed the mindset of not just overcoming challenges in my life, but the mindset that I would conquer them.  For three years, Mrs. Mauldin has seen me grow and become the person I am today.  I know that without her, that person would be completely different.  Her selfless love and care for her students is contagious and I am so thankful that she has been a part of my life.

I have been lucky to have many great educators at Franklin High School and all of them are very special to me, but one of my teachers especially stands out - Melissa Smith, my math teacher of two years.  Not only does Mrs. Smith exhibit an incredible amount of devotion to her subject matter, but she also demonstrates a strong devotion to her students.  Her enthusiasm in the classroom is truly inspiring and contagious.  The manner in which she conducts herself motivates me to be a better person.  She is always kind and caring, she never belittles her students and treats everyone with respect.  Every Friday, without fail, she reminds our class to make smart decisions, and hearing such advice from someone who treats us as peers rather than subordinates makes all the difference in the world.  I am confident that I am a better person in both mathematics and life for having had her as a teacher.

Honors and Awards:

Kelly Scheetz was my Spanish II Honors teacher during my first year at Franklin High.  In her class I further developed my vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills that have prepared me for classes that I have taken in later high school years, and that will certainly prove beneficial as I pursue a minor in Spanish. After being in her class my freshman year, I was privileged to serve as her student aid my sophomore year, and also joined the Spanish Honor Society.  I have always observed Mrs. Scheetz to be a patient helper and always ready to put her 100 percent into something, such as selling paletas or sweet tea at school events, assisting students complete important things such as scholarship applications on time, and  helping our chapter of SHH earn Chapter of the Year in 2009.  Some of my favorite qualities of Mrs. Scheetz are her subtle sense of humor, and gentleness in all situations.  Mrs. Scheetz truly wishes for her students to succeed, even if they are not as motivated, and pushes them to their utmost potential.  I am grateful to have had Mrs. Scheetz as not only a teacher at Franklin High School, but as an encourager and motivator to succeed at whatever I pursue, especially the Spanish language, which she has played a role in helping me form a love for.

Math has always been my most difficult subject.  It was a real struggle to understand some of the concepts.  Every year I felt I was falling behind a little.  Teresa Clark was the first teacher that helped me to excel and even enjoy math.  She would always spend extra time to help me and other students to make sure we understood before moving on.  Now I think that I could go into a field involving math, which was something I would have shied away from before.  Besides her phenomenal teaching skills, Ms. Clark is always sweet and fair to all of her math students.

If I had to pick a teacher who is special to me, I would have to say Luke Finley. I have had the privilege to be in his class for two years, most recently AP Physics.  Mr. Finley is special to me because not only is he an outstanding teacher, but he loves his job.  Mr. Finley has the rare gift of making the most boring and difficult topics interesting and enjoyable by using his unique personality and sense of humor.  He also cares about his students as people as much as he cares about the topic that he is teaching.  He did not treat us as inferiors, but as intellectual equals.  Because of all of these attributes, Mr. Finley has become not only my favorite teacher, but one of the best friends a high school student could have.  In true Finley form, he taught me it is okay to “FAIL!” every once in a while.  Luke “Zeus” Finley is a very special teacher to me, but more importantly an unforgettable and irreplaceable friend.

Mike Ragland was the most influential teacher I have ever come across.  He was more passionate about his classes than any other teacher or administrator I have ever had the pleasure of learning from.  History was always my worst class and a class I dreaded until I attended Mr. Ragland's Honor US History class.  Walking into that class, you could feel his excitement about the subject.  You could see how much he loved teaching and you could easily see how much he cared about his students.  His energy filled the room every morning, despite the ungodly hour.  Even as my head lulled as I first sat down in the classroom, by the time we left, I had an unexplainable amount of energy and was excited to learn more in his class the next day.  I took two history courses this year and both classes I found significantly more exciting and more interesting because I could remember certain facts and stories that Mr. Ragland had told us.  He was truly inspirational and a main factor of my success in high school.

Last year, I had Coach James Cherry for advanced placement chemistry.  Initially, I was really worried about taking the course, and was afraid it was going to be too difficult for me.  However, over the year Coach Cherry helped me develop confidence in my ability to understand chemistry and solve chemistry problems.  No matter how frustrated I was, he was always very encouraging and willing to answer and re-answer questions until I was finally able to understand.  When the class was studying acids and bases, he would go step by step through acid-base reactions over and over again, and never became frustrated when I asked him to answer another acid-base question.  Furthermore, Coach Cherry has impacted my career choice.  When I started looking into the education program at Calvin College last year, I learned I needed to major and minor.  I knew I wanted to major in mathematics, and initially I did not even consider teaching any type of science class. However, I have now decided to minor in chemistry.

Amber Dexter is more than a teacher.  She is an inspirer, a motivator, a role model and a friend.  I had Senorita Dexter for both Spanish Language AP and Spanish Literature AP.  In these classes, Senorita taught me that a language is not about the words; it's about the meaning and the emotion.  In her class I learned there are certain bonds between people that transcend languages.  Because of this greater knowledge, I was able to understand myself and literature in a more profound way.  Senorita helped me find an answer to any question I had, even if it didn't relate to Spanish.  She truly loves all of her students; she has inspired me to be a better Spanish speaker and an overall better person, and I know she will do the same for many more students in the future.
