Student Television Awards

Williamson County schools were well represented April 27 at this year's Student Television Awards for Excellence in Nashville. The awards are given out by the Midsouth Regional Chapter of the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which is the same organization that produces the Emmy Awards.
The annual awards were judged by TV professionals and handed out in seven categories including news, craft achievement and sports. News Channel 5 Meteorologist Lelan Statom hosted the event, which featured winners from across the state.
Brentwood High School students Dallas Wilson and Jason White were among the first place winners. Their video titled Dallas Wilson Compilation received the award for Craft Achievement. Jason White also
received an Honorable Mention in the News category for his video Cancer. Their teacher at Brentwood High School is Ronnie Adcock.
Centennial High School had two Honorable Mentions in the Public Affairs category. Marc Torrence and Morgan Gregory received an Honorable Mention for their video Clean, Colorful Chattanooga, and Katie Staples and Jelisa Chatman received an Honorable Mention for their video Ice Cream Social. They are taught by Dawn Marek.
Independence High School won two first place awards at the event. Colton Barto, Megan Fee, Andrew Sawyer and Kacey Plemons won first place in the Writing category for their video titled Texting and Walking, and Alex Basso won the award for Public Affairs with his video titled The Swine Flu and You. Independence student Kacey Plemons also received an Honorable Mention in the Public Affairs category for a video she made called Coin Drive, and the Indy Nation News team received an Honorable Mention in the News category. Matt Balzer is the Media Production teacher at Independence High School.
Ravenwood High School students Chad Watt, Ben Bayless, Taylor Minor, Cameron Childs and Jayce Boynton received an Honorable Mention in the area of Craft and Achievement for their video titled Strike 3 You're Out. Ravenwood's Cameron Childs and Taylor Minor also received an Honorable Mention in the Public Affairs category for a video they made titled Germ Defense. The Media Production teacher at Ravenwood is Sara Sweitzer.
