Record Number of WCS Teachers Earn National Board Certification
Published January 7, 2010
Sixteen Williamson County teachers recently earned National Board Certification, setting a record for the number of educators in the district to achieve the prestigious certification in the same year. In fact, Williamson County ranks second among school districts in the State for the number of new National Board Certified teachers.
National Board Certification is a voluntary process administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Candidates undergo a ten-part evaluation process specific to the teacher's discipline, including performance assessments of teaching strategies and written exercises to assess subject knowledge.
Fifteen of the WCS teachers who earned National Board Certification were part of a special cohort which helped them through the process. Members met once a month for 18 months to discuss strategies, share advice and help each other through the experience.
“I think that the National Board Certification is great for our teachers," said WCS Professional Development Coordinator Karen Hawkins. "It really helps them to improve as an educator which, in turn, helps our district as a whole."
Below you will find a list of the 16 Williamson County teachers who earned National Board Certification in 2009 along with a comment from each on what the experience has meant to them.
