District Improves ACT Scores

Williamson County students continue to outperform their peers on the ACT test. The district improved its ACT composite score from 22.6 in 2008 to 22.8 in 2009, which is well above the state average of 20.6. The college readiness exam is a graduation requirement for Williamson County students and is comprised of four subject tests which assess English, math, reading and science knowledge.
Brentwood High School posted the highest average of any Williamson County high school with 25.4, which is a full point higher than last year. "We're really excited about our ACT scores," says Brentwood High School Principal Kevin Keidel. "We think it proves what we've been saying all along which is if you take rigorous classes, it will pay off with increased academic achievement." In addition, 87 percent of the 2009 graduates scored a 21 or higher, qualifying them for a HOPE scholarship.
At Ravenwood High School, administrators credit the hard work of faculty and staff for helping to improving scores from a 24.1 in 2008 to a 24.6 in 2009. "Having a collaborative learning environment is one of the hallmarks of Ravenwood's effectiveness," says principal Dr. Pam Vaden. "It's a place where teachers can focus on common learning targets and assessments in same-subject areas."
And while the district is pleased to see improvement, there is much work left to be done. That's because the Williamson County Board of Education recently set forth a goal for all Williamson County high schools to average no less than a 24 on the ACT test by the year 2012.
