Brentwood High Students Host Open House

Published November 12, 2009

Students in Lee Huddleston's Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition classes at Brentwood High School will host an Open House Monday, November 16.

For several weeks, the students have been reading, studying and creating an art project based on the novel My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok. Those projects, which include 28 paintings and numerous multi-media presentations, will be put on display in the school library from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday.

The novel tells the story of a young Hasidic Jewish boy whose gift for drawing is looked down upon by his family, his community and his religion. As he grows older, the central character matures and meets a number of artists from the modern to contemporary period who help him come to terms with some of the most important divisions in his life.

"My students have researched the artists from the various movements in the novel such as impressionism, expressionism and surrealism," said Huddleston. "They also had to develop a multi-media project, plus an original piece of art."
