Big Backpack Giveaway

Published July 22, 2010

Free school supplies will be made available to Williamson County students at the 2010 Big Backpack Giveaway in Franklin.  The event will be held Saturday, July 31 at Liberty Elementary School.  In addition to food, music and games, organizers will provide free backpacks full of school supplies to students getting ready to head back to class.

"This is our eighth year for the Big Backpack Giveaway," said organizer Kristi Sylvester.  "It keeps growing.  This year, we expect to give away 600 backpacks to students in need."

Registration for the event will begin at 3:30 p.m.  Organizers are expecting 1,000 people to attend, so parents will want to arrive early.  Each child will have to pick up his or her own backpack.  Those who do not receive one will be put on a waiting list in case more become available.

In addition to providing free school supplies to students in need, the event is designed to give people living in Williamson County an opportunity to gather for a day of food and fellowship.

“It’s fun for the whole family," said Sylvester.  "We’ll have hot dogs, cotton candy and inflatable rides, so it will be a fun day."
