Vision Screenings

Published November 6, 2008

More than 3,500 Williamson County students received free vision screenings this year courtesy of the Franklin Lions Club. The screenings are provided for kindergarten, pre-K and early learning students at every school in the district. "Early detection of most eye problems helps to increase optimal vision results for the child," says Vision Screening Coordinator Susan Edenfield. "I feel this is important to their ability to get good vision results and reduce learning problems related to poor vision."

The vision screenings are conducted by trained members of the Franklin Lions Club. A special device called a SureSight instrument is used to obtain a reliable reading of each eye. The readings are sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where specialists determine if the child should be referred to an eye care professional.

In addition to the free screenings, the Lions Club also provides free glasses to those who meet the needs criteria. In order to fund the program, the Franklin Lions Club will be having a Lions Pride Breakfast and Silent Auction December 13 from 6:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall on 5th Avenue South. Tickets are $8 for adults and $3 for children ages three through seven.
