Summer Construction

Published June 24, 2009

Summer break is typically an active time for construction in Williamson County schools, and this year is no exception. From classroom additions to renovations, crews are hard at work trying to get everything in place for the upcoming school year.

Several schools across the district will receive classroom additions this summer. Workers are in the process of adding rooms to four schools: Lipscomb, Edmondson, Bethesda and Fairview Middle. Each school will receive between two and four classrooms. Those additions should be in place by the start of the school year.

Work will begin soon at the site of the new elementary school in west Franklin according to Williamson County Schools Facilities and Construction Director Kevin Fortney. "We've got our grading permit and we'll be starting on the site next week with earth work," said Fortney. "That project will take us a year to build. We plan to have it open by August, 2010."

In southern Williamson County, construction crews are busy putting up the roof framing on the new Homestead Middle School. With the second floor now in place, crews will begin work on the exterior brick in a few weeks. Homestead Middle, which is being built in the Spring Hill/Thompson's Station area, will alleviate crowding at Heritage Middle School. It is on schedule to open in July, 2010.

Plans for a new elementary and high school in the Spring Hill area are also moving forward. Bids will be opened next month and construction will start in early August on a new high school off Buckner Lane and Twin Lakes Drive. The district will begin taking bids for the new elementary school, located off Hurt Road, on July 21. They hope to start construction in early August and have it completed by July, 2010.

Meanwhile, the district's new Support Services Building is nearly complete. The building, which will house the district's maintenance, technology and food service departments, is located next to the Williamson County Schools Transportation Department on Carters Creek Pike. Crews will start paving the area around the building in the next few weeks.
