Schools Participate in Picturing America

Published February 12, 2009

Six Williamson County schools are among those recently awarded with the National Endowment for the Humanities' Picturing America program.

Picturing America is designed to help students learn about American history. Chapman's Retreat Elementary, Lipscomb Elementary, Oak View Elementary, Winstead Elementary, Sunset Middle and Fairview High are among the schools recently chosen to participate in this exciting program.

Each school will receive 40 large, high-quality reproductions of great American art

to be used in the classroom. The teachers will also receive a resource book which will provide them with ideas and background information as they use the works of art in core subject areas like social studies, language arts and American history.

"The Picturing America program brings to life our American history through beautiful works of art that inspire appreciation and pride," says Oak View Elementary Principal Denise Goodwin. "The detailed pictures and the core curriculum teaching resources will ensure that our students gain a better understanding of the important moments, events and people that have shaped America."

The Picturing America program began in 2008. More than a dozen Williamson County Schools have already received this grant. Materials for the most recent awardees will be delivered this spring.
