Conserving Energy & Cutting Costs

Published April 16, 2009

Williamson County Schools employees are working together to conserve energy and cut down on utility expenses across the district.  Earlier this year, Interim Superintendent Dr. David Heath met with principals to discuss cost saving measures.  By doing simple things like making sure lights are turned off at the end of the day, WCS employees have helped the district realize a combined cost avoidance of $128,122 on the February and March bills.

“Even though utility rates increased from last year and considering that we had several new additions to buildings, we were still able to save more than $100,000 in just two months from our expected expenses,” said Heath.  “I appreciate the efforts of the teachers and staff in making adjustments in their classrooms and throughout the buildings.”

Principals who saved the most money for the district during the first month were awarded “golden light bulbs” at a March meeting.  Those schools include Bethesda, Chapman’s Retreat, Heritage, Kenrose, Longview, Oak View, Nolensville, Sunset and Walnut Grove elementary schools; Sunset and Woodland middle schools; and Brentwood, Fairview, Franklin, Independence and Ravenwood high schools.  Trinity Elementary received a special award for going above and beyond in the area of conservation.
