FMS Principal Receives Award

Published May 22, 2008

Fairview Middle School Principal Brian Bass was honored recently at a celebration in Nashville. Bass was among 18 principals from across the state to receive the Education Consumers Foundation Value-Added Achievement Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize the top achieving schools in the state in teaching reading, language arts and mathematics. The awards were presented May 12 during a ceremony in the State Capitol. Tennessee's Acting Education Commissioner Dr. Tim Webb was on hand for the event.

Three top elementary and three top middle schools in each division were identified for this award, and it was noted that if every school in Tennessee were similarly effective, Tennessee would be an unrivaled national leader in education. "The principals and teachers of these schools are doing an excellent job in helping their students learn, and in raising standards and expectations," said Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen. "Their record of performance speaks to their hard work and dedication."

Fairview Middle School received third place in its division. Principal Bass was presented a certificate, a banner and a cash reward of $1,000. "The secret to our success at Fairview Middle School can be attributed to a common simple belief that we can always improve," said Bass. "There will always be students who can learn more than they are currently learning."
