Communication is the Key

In this day and age it's more important than ever for parents, teachers and administrators to communicate effectively. Proper communication is the best way to ensure each child receives a quality educational experience. If you have a question or problem concerning your child or the school, the National Parent Teacher Association offers some suggestions to help you address the situation.

When a parent is faced with a problem or question concerning their child's school, the situation can best be resolved when the parents follow the proper chain of command. First, the parent should take the question or problem to the specific teacher. If the problem has not been resolved after several days, the adult should then talk to the building principal. If the problem still exists, the parent should proceed to the appropriate grade level director. And if all else fails, he or she should go to the superintendent. It is also important for teachers and other staff members to follow the same chain of command when addressing issues within the school.

We all get frustrated from time to time, but it is never a good idea for a parent to criticize teachers or school officials in front of his or her child. Parents should remember to handle complaints directly with the appropriate school personnel.

When a problem arises at school, it's important for parents to get the complete story before reacting. There are two sides to every story which is why it's always a good idea to gather all the facts before jumping to any conclusions.

Parents are naturally protective of their children, which is why tempers sometimes flare when problems arise. But it's important for parents to avoid angry confrontations with teachers and other personnel. Instead, they should try to settle each problem without causing lasting damage to their relationship with the school.
