Williamson County Schools Participates in Pinwheels for Peace

Published September 28, 2006

In this age when conflict and war is becoming all too common, it is easy to take peace for granted. But on September 21 six Williamson County Schools made a small contribution to world, or in this case, "whirled" peace. Edmondson, Lipscomb, Chapman's Retreat and Crockett elementary schools, and Fairview and Sunset middle schools participated in the "Pinwheels for Peace" project in conjunction with the International Day of Peace.

Students created pinwheels, and planted them outside their schools. Themes of patriotism, peace, and all sorts of artistic creativity were displayed.

"Pinwheels for Peace" was started last year by two art teachers in Florida as a way for students to express their feelings about what is going on in the world. An estimated 500,000 pinwheels were planted in about 1,350 locations throughout the world in 2005, and this year, that number grew to about one million pinwheels spinning in more than 2,400 worldwide locations.
