School Lunches

Published August 3, 2006

School lunch prices will remain the same as last year. Prices are $2.25 at elementary schools and $2.50 at middle and high schools. An adult lunch is $3.00 for county employees and staff and $3.25 for guests. The holiday lunch is $5.00.

Breakfast prices are $1.50 for students at elementary, middle and high schools, and ala carte items are available as well. Employees and visitors will pay ala carte for breakfast items.

More than 16,900 meals are prepared daily for students, and parents are encouraged to take advantage of a computerized system that allows parents to pay for their child’s school meals in advance. The system also tracks the food their child is purchasing. More information regarding procedures will be shared by each school.

The food service department continues to focus on ways to improve its meals with new menus developed by the food service staff.

"We will continue to offer menu carb counts," said Food Service Manager James Griffith. “This will allow parents, especially parents with diabetic children, to know the choices for the day.”

Griffith said that his department continues to provide the latest healthy choices that meet all state department and USDA requirements as well as making available a variety of ala carte items to students, teachers and employees.

Additionally added to the staff this year is a recent graduate of Johnson and Wales College of Culinary Arts. “Our focus is to improve food quality, food preparation, increase promotions for school lunch and school breakfast week, and marketing and merchandising," said Griffith. “This coupled with our new wellness policy that will be in place, will offer many challenges for the upcoming school year.”
