Big Honors for Brentwood Middle School
Published September 28, 2006
Life is good at Brentwood Middle School these days. In the past few weeks, school leaders have learned of two distinguished honors.
Congratulations are definitely in order for Brentwood Middle School recently being nationally recognized as a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School. U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings made the announcement September 22. Brentwood Middle School Principal Dr. Kay Kendrick says the school completed a narrative about a plan that lets both high achieving and lower achieving students improve their Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) scores. "Everyone has worked persistently to improve," says Kendrick. "The faculty and I are very proud of this distinction... the award also supports that our feeder schools do a great job."
Brentwood Middle School will be presented with a plaque and Blue Ribbon School flag on November 10 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Brentwood Middle School isn't the only school to receive this honor. Grassland Middle School was a Blue Ribbon recipient in 2004.
Also, on September 13, Brentwood Middle School learned it was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee awards these discretionary grants in the field of the arts and humanities, conservation and preservation, environment, education, employment and training, health and human services, housing and economic and community development. Visual arts teacher Maggie Tucker applied for the award and plans to use the money to buy drafting tables for the school's art classes.
“The Community Foundation is a place where every gift matters because when combined they can have an enormous impact across the area and across issues spanning arts to education to health and human services to zoology," says Community Foundation President Ellen Lehman. "Our local non-profits are doing wonderful work and it is our privilege to offer them support.”
Congratulations to Brentwood Middle School students, staff, and parents on their recent accomplishments!
